Anniversary Event | IAE successfully held the First International Forum on Gas Turbine Engine

On April 21-22, the First International Forum on Gas Turbine Engine was held by the Institute for Aero Engine (IAE),Tsinghua University. YANG Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, YIN Zeyong, Academician and Director of Science and Technology Committee with AECC, WANG Yuming, Academician and Tsinghua University and other invited experts attended the forum. The forum offered ten keynote speeches, and attracted over 200 experts both at home and aboard to participate online and offline. The opening remarks were moderated by GAN Xiaohua, President of IAE of Tsinghua University.

YANG Bin delivered opening remarks
In his opening remarks, YANG Bin pointed out that the IAE establishment constitutes an important development strategy of Tsinghua University in the new century, and an important measure for Tsinghua to develop into a first-class university with first-class disciplines in the world. With two development strategies of “in-depth military-civilian integration” and “opening-up and cooperation” identified, IAE strives to seek the national technical path of independent research and development on aero engines by focusing on “fundamental theory, critical technology and talent training”, in a bid to offer fundamental theories and core technology for the materialization of next-generation “high-end, far, fast and smart” aero engines. In his speech, YANG Bin said that when General Secretary XI Jinping inspected Tsinghua University on April 19, 2021, XI believed that “the development of Tsinghua IAE reflects the spirit of Tsinghua University to take the initiative and assume responsibilities in the new era.”

Academician YIN Zeyong was invited to give a report
In the forum, Academician YIN Zeyong gave a keynote speech on the health management and smart use and maintenance of aero-engines. His speech covers the importance of above-mentioned, analysis of airborne and ground subsystem functions, reviews the history of engine health management and domestic development status. He introduced in detail those researches on smart sensors and detection technology, smart diagnosis and prediction technology, as well as 5G-based augmented reality maintenance technology.

SUN Xiasheng was invited to give a report
SUN Xiasheng, Executive Vice President of Chinese Aeronautical Establishment, introduced the development and prospect of green aviation technology surrounding the needs and critical technologies of new-generation supersonic civil aircrafts. The key technologies involved and the development goals and expected indicators of variable cycle engines were also analyzed.

Burtsev Serge Alexeivich was invited to give a report
Burtsev Serge Alexeivich, Professor of Bauman Moscow State Technical University, was invited to give an online report about the design of nozzles for turbojet and turbofan engines. His report introduced in detail those main factors and principles considered, compared several existing design plans and ideas around the world, analyzed the advantages and weakness of different plans under different work scenarios, and proposed new ideas about the future design of nozzles on the basis of the above.

Makarov Sergey Borisovich was invited to give a report
Makarov Sergey, Academician of PHA and Professor of Peter the Great Saint-Petersburg Polytechnic University, gave an online report about the research on engine-related wireless sensing technology. Academician Makarov fully agreed with Academician YIN Zeyong’s view that aero-engine health management will be one of the important development directions in the future. Combined with his own research work, he introduced low-power ultra-wideband narrow pulse technology, advanced codec technology, the wireless transmission scheme of smart networking technology in the complex mechanical, electromagnetic and vibration environment of aero engines. This is of great significance to the future development of aero-engine data monitoring, health management and so on.

Peter Jeschke was invited to give a report
Professor Peter Jeschke from RWTH Aachen University in Germany made a keynote speech on the development needs and indicators of future hybrid electric propulsion aircrafts, and conducted discussions about fan design concerning how to reduce noise and improve efficiency.

The team of Academician WANG Yuming was invited to give a report
The subject of the report given by Mr. LI Yongjian from the team of Academician WANG Yuming was the development status and prospect of aero-engine sealing and lubrication technology. The report emphasized that future development trends will focus on intelligent health management, new material development and application, magnetic levitation and all-electric technology.

LIU Peijin was invited to give a report
Professor LIU Peijin from Northwestern Polytechnical University made a keynote report on the future development trend of aerospace combined power. His report elaborated the future development directions of combined power technology from reusable structure and thermal protection technology, matching technology of variable geometry regulation flow channel and integrated simulation platform.

ZHANG Xinguo was invited to give a report
Professor ZHANG Xinguo, former Deputy General Manager of Aviation Industry Corporation of China and President of China Aeronautical Establishment, introduced concepts such as MBSE system modeling and layer-by-layer mapping in the aero-engine industry, shared the development status of model-based digital transformation, and pointed out the urgency of design analysis, hierarchical analysis and paradigm shift about the engineering architecture of aero-engine system.

SUN Xiaofeng was invited to give a report
Professor SUN Xiaofeng from Beihang University shared his research results on aeroacoustics for aviation applications. A new approach to cross-scale simulation of sound from moving boundaries was developed. A basic theoretical framework for the interaction between sound sources and propagation was built and the theoretical models were developed to verify the experimental methods of advanced aeroacoustics.

HU Zhongzhi was invited to give a report
The keynote speech made by HU Zhongzhi, Chief Research Fellow of Tsinghua IAE, focused on the current situation and challenges of digital aero-engine technology to share the architecture of aero-engine digital twin and R&D platform design, as well as the physics-based and data-driven modeling and simulation platforms for collaborative R&D.

Academician GAN Xiaohua made closing remarks
In the end, Academician GAN Xiaohua summarized and reviewed the First International Forum on Gas Turbine Engines. The reports by the invited experts offered in-depth discussion about the latest progress and important breakthroughs in the fundamental research, core technologies, digital simulation and advanced manufacturing of aero-engines and new propulsion technologies; summarized the future needs, outlook and existing challenges of gas turbine and aero engine development. Meanwhile, this forum has promoted in-depth exchanges and cooperation between scholars both at home and abroad.
